Details
Simply delightful. Arrayán's 'Mentrida' boasts rich, intense notes of hay, corn and toasted nuts up top. This is silky, with a fabulous linear, lean accent before a blast of bosc pear and kaffir lime hits the palate. Mineral, with plenty of freshness and effortlessly balanced. A must-try.
This estate is the brainchild of José María Entrecanales and his wife, María Marsans who run their estate just outside of Toledo, the old capital of Spain. The estate was purchased in 1999, but things really started to gather momentum in 2009, when the duo appointed Maite Sánchez as head winemaker. With a renewed focus on local, indigenous varieties, Bodegas Arrayán's reputation began to grow. All fermentations are carried out with wild yeasts. The team has adopted environmentally friendly vineyard management, avoiding the use of herbicides and pesticides to favour and promote as much biodiversity across their land as possible. Arrayán are fast gaining cult status in the UK and on the broader wine scene. Their wines are hard to get a hold of and allocation is small, so when we had the chance to take them, we didn't think twice.

Pairing guide
This deliciously light and crisp white wine is one of Spain’s best-kept secrets, and we just love the way it pairs with refreshing flavours and lighter summer dishes. It’s especially good served alongside ceviche and sashimi, fish like red snapper and bream, and with stuffed peppers and fried courgette flowers. Arancini and other rice dishes, simple pasta recipes, marinated anchovies and tortilla will also work very well.
