Details
The nose on this fab Godello leads with citrus - lemon, grapefruit and orange peel - before opening up to baked white peach and nectarine, with a mineral, crushed-gravel quality running beneath it all. On the palate it's dry with high acidity, a creamy, almost silky texture, and an intensity of flavour that catches you off guard in the best possible way. The finish is long, salty and deeply satisfying. This is a seriously good glass of wine!

Bodega del Abad sits in Carracedelo, right in the heart of El Bierzo - one of northwest Spain's most exciting wine regions, tucked between the windswept plateaus of Castile and the lush green coast of Galicia. The name is a nod to the nearby Monastery of Carracedo, a centuries-old symbol of the region and a reminder that people have been making wine here for a very long time. The winery itself is more recent, the family planted their first vines in 2000 and officially opened the cellar in 2003. Twenty-five years on, the winery is a family affair in the truest sense, with a daughter of the founding family now at the helm, bringing a fresh energy while staying true to the region's roots. All 25 hectares of vineyards are planted with Bierzo's two great native grapes - red Mencía and white Godello - grown on steep slopes and slate-rich soils that give the wines their distinctive mineral character. This is a winery that knows exactly where it comes from, and lets the land do the talking.

Pairing guide
That creamy texture and citrus-driven intensity makes this a natural with rich seafood - think grilled langoustines, a classic prawn bisque, or seared scallops with a lemon butter sauce. The mineral salinity is a dream alongside oysters or a good plate of anchovies. For a vegan pairing, try it with a roasted cauliflower and preserved lemon tart, or a chilled white gazpacho with almonds and grapes - the wine's citrus peel notes and saline finish play beautifully off the cool, nutty richness of the dish. This wine suits any occasion - elegant enough for a dinner party, and easy enough for a random Tuesday lunch.
