Details
This is the gateway wine from Attis and a fabulous example of serious Albariño. Made from 35-year-old vines, this wine is fermented with natural yeasts and sits on its lees for four months, just to kick up a bit of weight and complexity. Lots of apple and pear fruit up top with a limey frame. In the mouth, there is a honeyed, almost fat texture with a crisp, zingy finish.

Since its inception in 2000, Attis has gained an almost cult-like status in Spain, recognised for the purity and complexity of their wines. Brothers Robustiano and Baldomero Farina (the best named brothers in the land!) call the shots here under the watchful eye of Jean Francois Hebrard, a well-known French winemaker. Their wines range from salty, mineral Albariños through to textural orange wines and lush dessert styles. You will find Attis in the middle of Val do Salnés, in the heart of Albariño country. Their vineyards overlook the Arousa estuary, and beyond that, the Atlantic ocean. The proxitmity to water seems to imbue the wines with a marine potency, as well as that salty tang. The whole range is detailed and refreshing, and well worth your attention.

Pairing guide
With its remarkable freshness and brightness, Albariño has to be one of the best hidden-gem white wines out there for food pairing. It’s a natural match for fish and shellfish dishes of almost all descriptions - silky white fish like sea bass, cod and chips, crab, scallops, shrimp, lobster… the list just goes on and on. It’s also one of our favourite wines to serve with soft, fresh cheeses, and salted cheeses like feta, making it perfect with Greek salads and a thousand other variations.

Wine region
Rías Baixas, Spain
Rías Baixas is a region in northwestern Spain that is responsible for Spain's greatest success story when it comes to white wine: Albariño. The region is broken down into a number of sub-zones, each with their own unique influence on Albariño. However, they all largely share one common characteristic: proximity to the Atlantic. In fact, some of these coastal vineyards are so close to the ocean that the salty sea air quite literally settles on the fruit, sometimes giving the wines a wonderful saline, salty tang. Whilst this is quite a wet region, there is plenty of sunshine for ripening grapes and many of the vineyards are planted on granitic soils, offering up firm, fresh acidity to these wines. Albariño is commonly known for its refreshing character with notes of crisp apples and citrus, but there is plenty of experimentation at play in the region and it's not hard to find examples from more experimental winemakers.
