Details
Honestly, what's not to love about a great bottle of Montepulciano? This red from Albenza shows off a lovely red fruit nose, with notes of sour cherry, raspberry and a lovely Italian rusticity. Delicious.
Origin: Central Italy, either Tuscany or Abruzzo. Mainly Grown In: Italy leads the way, with small amounts found in the USA and Australia. Key Facts: Confusingly sharing a name with a Tuscan town to which it has no relation, Montepulciano is the second most planted indigenous Italian red variety, behind Sangiovese. Found up and down the length of the country, it is successful in central Italy, with northern versions a little hard and green, due to Montepulciano's late-ripening tendencies. Often also used for the production of rosé, Montepulciano has found happy homes in South Australia and California in recent decades with smooth, medium-bodied examples being produced as winemakers look to champion more Mediterranean grape varieties outside of Italy. Fun Fact: The town of Montepulciano in Tuscany and the grape have nothing in common. Another example of the world of wine out to confuse us! Don't worry, we've got your back.

Pairing guide
We love Montepulciano. You love Montepulciano. We all love this beautiful Italian red, which packs in more flavour and depth than you can shake a vine at. It’s the perfect wine for serving alongside the darkest and richest meats you can get your hands on - brisket, oxtail, game like venison and boar, slow-cooked beef bolognese or bourguignon stews… all will make for unmissable matches. Aubergine and parmesan combos will work very well, as will wild mushrooms and truffle, garlicky vegetables and bitter greens like cavolo nero. Delicious!

Abruzzo, Italy
Abruzzo is located in the southern central part of Italy, east of Rome. The region not only is amazing to pronounce but also produces amazing wines. The two most famous varieties to come out of Abruzzo are Montepulciano and Trebbiano. The region is also known to be the home of the Maremma, which is a sheep guardian dog. The two famed grape varieties have varied levels of quality with the outstanding examples from Emidio Pepe which are truly sought after.
