Details
The 'Barbadelo' is a true, rustic expression of Mencía, arguably the finest red grape variety to come out of northwestern Spain. This wine is laced with notes of liquorice and kirsch, with a delightful aromatic quality comprising saffron and spice. Par for the course with Mencía, we have a mouthful of chewy, well-integrated tannins here, making this a lovely food wine.
Galicia in northwestern Spain is an interesting place in the wine world. Whilst the region is home to Spain's greatest white wine (in terms of exports and production): Albariño, it is also a hotbed for diversity and innovation, and its cool climate terroirs have inspired some of the nation's most exciting red and white wines in the past few decades. Conceived in 2017, Adegas Terrae boasts a pretty complete portfolio, working their 33 hectares of vineyards that span across all of Galicia's sub-regions (Rías Baixas, O Ribeiro, Monterrei, Ribeira Sacra and Valdeorras), so it would be safe to say that these guys are a pretty solid snapshot of this part of the world. With high-quality wines and fun, quirky packaging, Adegas Terrae is going some way to promote the sheer depth and diversity on show in Galicia. We are very proud to list their lovely wines here at GPD central.

Pairing guide
We all love a great bottle of Mencía, and this beautiful release from Adegas Terrae definitely knows how to satisfy the senses. It’s best paired with juicy red meat dishes - think lamb shanks in gravy, pan-roasted duck breast, sirloin steak and chicken livers on toast. If you can bring a berry jus or plum sauce into the equation, you’re onto a winner! We also love this wine with garlic potato dishes, steamed greens, beef and garlic stir-fry, rich tomato ragu sauces and all kinds of slow-cooked casseroles and stews. Yum.
