Every now and then a you find a new wine that totally changes your perceptions for a given region, grape or style of wine. This wine does just that. Alexander Gomes is a lucky man. Proud owner of A&D Wines, which is situated in the impossibly beautiful Quinta de Santa Teresa, he gets to wake up every day, look out over a verdant Portuguese valley, and get to work producing some of the most delicious wines to come out of the country in recent years. No wonder he’s so keen to show off his winery as well as his produce, and has become a must-see operation on the booming Portuguese wine tours which have taken off over the past decade! A&D Wines produces a handful of different styles made from a bunch of different native Portuguese varietals, but it’s his Vinho Verde which have captured the public imagination most successfully. Made from the expressive and zesty Alvarinho grapes which grow beneath the Iberian sunshine, Gomes’ green wine captures the brightness, acidity, and amazing food-friendliness of this quintessentially Portuguese slightly sparkling wine. A lucky, lucky man indeed.

Pairing guide
Avesso is one of those classic white wine styles that really ticks all the right boxes when it comes to lazy sunny lunchtimes - there’s something about the flavours of this wine that work best when dining al fresco, especially when the food on offer is simple yet delicious, and rustic yet irresistible. As such, we love pairing this wine with seared or grilled fish dishes, roast chicken thighs, salmon and trout (especially with a creamy, herb-rich sauce), and buttery pasta.

Wine region

Vinho Verde, Portugal
Vinho Verde is a wine region located in the Minho province of Portugal, known for producing light and refreshing wines that are perfect for warm weather. The region's name, which means "green wine," refers to the young age of the wines, which are typically consumed within a year of their production. The wines are typically made from indigenous grape varieties, such as Alvarinho and Loureiro, and are characterised by their low alcohol content, high acidity, and slight effervescence. There is a fascinating tradition of having the vines climb up high so you can pick the grapes while standing however this has mostly faded out now.
