1. Val Moreira Douro White Blend 2024

If you haven’t come across Val Moreira yet, it’s a name that captures the spirit of the Douro in a way that feels both authentic and exciting. Based in the heart of the Cima Corgo, this is a region shaped by centuries of winemaking, where steep, terraced vineyards carved into schist soils have long been home to some of Portugal’s most iconic wines. Val Moreira leans fully into that heritage, working primarily with indigenous grape varieties that have thrived here for generations - the likes of Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, and a host of traditional field blends that reflect the true diversity of the Douro. Complex and beautifully layered, this Douro white brings together a spectrum of native varieties, shaped by French oak and extended lees ageing. Aromas of ripe citrus, baked apple, and white peach are wrapped in notes of toasted almond, vanilla, and a gentle hint of spice. There’s a subtle savoury edge too, brioche, and a touch of honey. On the palate, vibrant acidity cuts through a creamy, textured core. The finish is long and polished, balancing freshness, richness, and a refined, nutty complexity.

2. 'Monge' Sparkling NV

Quinta do Casal Branco is a brand new addition for us here at Good Pair Days and an impressive producer discovered back in 2023 during a trip out to Portugal in search of vinous gold. Impressed by the wines from the Tejo region - a true up-and-coming part of the country - this is the land of the Fernão Pires and Castelão grapes, both of which are indigenous to the region. This is a fine sparkling wine from the Tejo, and a fantastic answer to Cava or Champagne. Classically structured with notes of almond and candied citrus character overlaps with toast and brioche.

3. Mula Velha 'Reserva' Syrah Blend 2024

Mula Velha translates as "Old Mule" and we couldn't love a wine name more. There's something wonderfully apt about it: stubborn in its commitment to quality, hardworking, unpretentious and quietly excellent in everything it does. Born in Lisbon under the careful watch of Parras Wines, this is a brand built around showcasing the very best of Portugal's native grape varieties with minimal fuss and maximum character. Mula Velha Reserva Syrah absolutely delivers. Dark blackcurrant, blackberry and bramble with chocolate, a savoury tomato edge and six months in oak adding depth and structure. It's dry, super concentrated and very much built for the table.
