Three stunning red wines from Italy - £65
Italian Reds
'Il Randagio' Cabernet Blend
Cabernet Blend. Sean O’Callaghan might be an Englishman from Somerset, but he certainly is no stranger to Italy, in particular Tuscany. Before taking the helm at Tenuta di Carleone, Sean oversaw winemaking operations at the famous Reicine estate for a quarter of a century - this guy is a Chianti specialist. This is a declassified red, being a blend of Cabernet Franc and Merlot. This is elegant and fresh with notes of dark berry fruit and plum, fringed by a lick of rustic Italian charm, leather and varnish.
I Balzi Montepulciano d'Abruzzo
Montepulciano. The I Balzi range is a premium line-up from the ever-reliable team at Verga, one of Italy’s top wine producers with deep roots and even deeper reach across the country’s best wine regions. Known for their consistent quality and regional authenticity, Verga has taken things up a notch with I Balzi - showcasing Italy’s most iconic grape varieties in a way that’s stylish, expressive, and true to their origins. Lively and fruit-forward, this red opens with a mix of juicy cherries, blackberries, and raspberries, layered with hints of bramble, dried herbs, and a touch of lavender. A subtle note of graphite adds a savoury edge, giving it just enough complexity. It’s dry, fresh, and light on its feet, with smooth, gentle tannins and bright acidity that keeps things lifted. With its vibrant fruit and easy charm, this is a crowd-pleasing red that delivers all the right notes with minimal fuss.
Tenuta Viglione 'Circles' Nero Di Troia
Nero di Troia. Tenuta Viglione is located in the heart of Puglia in southern Italy, where the beaches are stunning and the sun equally ideal. Puglia is home to varieties that have found a natural home in the new world, like Fiano and Primitivo. However, behind this, there are a host of other varieties that will become household names in a handful of years, like Verdeca and Nero Di Troia. Nero Di Troia is another grape variety that is local to only Puglia, however there are a few producers outside of these sunny shores that are playing around with it. This is a lovely example with black cherry, dark spices of cloves and vanilla along with earthy tones. The fruit is playing second fiddle with this, so if you love spice, this is your type of wine.
