Story
Some distilleries make booze. Gooderham & Worts helped build a city. Back in 1832, two Englishmen - James Worts and his brother-in-law William Gooderham - set up shop with a grist mill in what would eventually become downtown Toronto. One thing led to another (grain, steam, ambition, possibly a few well-lubricated business meetings), and by the late 1800s they were running one of the largest whisky operations on the planet. Like, two million gallons a year large. They didn't just shape Canada’s drinking habits - they literally helped shape Toronto.
Of course, no booze empire is safe from history. Prohibition hit, then modernity, and the original distillery eventually shuttered - but not before leaving behind Victorian warehouses, a legacy of whisky excellence, and a Flatiron building that’s still flexing in Toronto’s Distillery District. Today, the G&W brand lives on in partnership with Laird & Company, who’ve revived the name (and the attitude) with a little help from Kentucky’s bourbon country. The result? A heritage-rich spirit that’s as much about craftsmanship as it is about not taking itself too seriously.
The G&W Private Stock Kentucky Sour Mash Bourbon is the kind of whiskey that doesn’t need hype - it just needs a glass. Made with 72% corn and equal parts rye and malted barley, it’s got all the charm: warm, layered, and slightly spicy. The nose is apple pie and vanilla, the palate’s all orchard fruit and butterscotch, and the finish hangs around like your favourite dinner guest - clove, caramel, just enough heat to remind you it’s bourbon. Whether you’re sipping it neat or using it for cocktails - it’s way better than your weird uncle’s bourbon fruit fly trap.
