Story

Double-Barrelled is one of Reading’s proudest liquid success stories, a brewery that’s as full of character as the beers it produces. Founded by husband-and-wife team Mike and Luci Clayton-Jones, the brand began as a passion project fuelled by homebrewing experiments, world-beer adventures, and a shared dream of creating modern, flavour-forward beers for everyone to enjoy.

After a wildly successful crowdfunding campaign and years of graft, the brewery opened its doors in Tilehurst, Reading, becoming a vibrant hub of creativity, community, and very tasty pints.

Their beer range is a joyful mix of crowd-pleasing cores and playful limited releases. Expect juicy IPAs that practically glow, rich stouts that feel like dessert in a glass, crisp lagers, bold sours, and off-the-wall specials with names as fun as their flavour profiles. Double-Barrelled love exploring styles, pushing boundaries, and celebrating beer’s infinite potential.

Their taproom, set inside the brewery itself, is one of Reading’s must-visit spots. It’s welcoming, energetic, and often buzzing with events, food pop-ups, and a rotating line-up of fresh releases. With a second city taproom expanding their reach, Double-Barrelled continues to grow while staying true to its roots: independent, community-minded, and obsessed with great beer.

For our next feature with Double-Barrelled, we are going for another one of their big hitters which has stood the test of time since day dot. 'Rivers' is crafted in a refined, hazy house style, and at 3.4% this banging session IPA offers a bright, juicy medley of ripe and zesty fruit notes. It captures the depth and flavour of a true Double-Barrelled IPA making it an absolute hit for this month's line up.

PAIRING GUIDE

Fantastically ripe and zesty, this beautiful IPA from Double Barrelled uses Mosaic and Simcoe Cryo hops to produce a beer that’s bursting with pithy citrus and passion fruit notes… and we just can’t get enough of it! All those tropical flourishes make it a great choice for pairing with Caribbean dishes with white fish or meat with fruits like mango and plantain, or with Asian cuisine featuring aromatic ginger, coriander, chilli and garlic. Chinese takeaway favourites such as chow mein or pork sweet and sour will also work well, and we reckon it’s also a top match for battered calamari, papaya salads and jerk chicken stew. Delicious!
