Details
You can see the deft touch of a clever winemaker with this super stylish Chardonnay. Erin has drawn in grapes from the cool Alpine Valleys in NE Victoria for this wine, crafting an ultra-minerally wine that has all sorts of interesting nutty layers on top of, making for something that is both extra fresh but also layered and complex too.

Erin Frances Pooley (thus the name) is one of Australia's most exciting young winemakers, although no one really knows that yet! Born and raised in Sydney, she graduated from Charles Sturt University with a degree in Wine Science before moving to California and began making wine in 2007. Come the year that was 2020, she returned home with a desire to start afresh and make wines from her own backyard. Erin has a keen wine mind, coupled with a global palate. Together, these form a powerful weapon that she applies with laser focus in finding unsung fruit sources and coaxing all the nuance and detail from them. The complexity she manages to imbue into her wines is wonderful, and they have that rare delight of changing slowly over time in the glass and once the bottle has been opened. It's a pleasure to have these wines in the GPD stable!

Pairing guide
It can't always be Christmas, but if there was a wine that makes things feel a bit more fancy, it is Erin Pooley's cool Chardonnay. It’s a great wine for cracking open for your luxurious fish and seafood-based Christmas courses - we especially loved it with a prawn salad, scallops with charcuterie, and lobster thermidor or similarly buttery shellfish creation - and it’s also a great choice for creamy pasta dishes, smoked ham salads and anything with avocado and smoked salmon. Coconut cream curries, chicken and mushroom pastries and pies, and classics like carbonara and cacio e pepe will also deliver brilliant results.

Wine region
Alpine Valleys, Australia
In north-east Victoria, neighbouring Beechworth and King Valley regions is scenic Alpine Valley. It is quite the tourist destination with year-round resort activities at Mt Hotham, Mt Buffalo and Falls Creek. The main varieties here are Prosecco, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in the cooler lofty areas, while Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon perform in the warmer lower elevations. Vineyard elevations here range between 155m-320m, but the highest point in the region is 1972m above sea level for scale! Alpine Valley is most certainly continental, with a favourably big difference between day and night temperatures. Careful site selection is critical here, vignerons favour slopey hillsides with optimum airflow to minimise the threat of frost in Spring - during flowering and Autumn frost around harvest season.
