Details
Sure, Albariño gets all the credit in Galicia as the go-to grape, but the other, lesser-known white grapes that are heroed at Bodegas Pentecostés are worth love all on their own. Here, we see Albariño with Caíño Blanco, Loureiro and a drop of Treixadura making for a wine that is impressively minerally and super fresh but with these subtle hints of peach and green mango to the mix. What a super fresh delight!

We're on the north-western coast of Spain here - an oceanic, sunny spot that is best known (wine-wise) for the Albariño grape. Like many contemporary Rías Baixas vineyard owners, Alberto Cabaco made his fortune in Galicia’s lucrative fishing industry. Retired and with no children, he returned to his birthplace of Gondomar, a village nestled among lush Atlantic forests of the Miñor Valley in the northern reaches of the O Rosal subregion. With no wine background, he bought land and planted a vineyard, and convinced young sommelier-turned-winemaker Jorge Marcote to join him and make great wine. Marcote first rebuilt and then replanted the terraces of the vineyard to Albariño (of course) and other local varieties - Caíño Blanco, Loureiro and Treixadura, matching each variety to one of the slope’s five different orientations. He makes wines with no mucking around - just great grapes turned into delicious wines. Without doubt, this is an address to watch - if you think of dry German Riesling meets Chablis, you're on the right track.

Pairing guide
This gorgeous Pentecostés release showcases the full spectrum of Rias Baixas grape flavours and delivers a wine that is such a joy to pair with different dishes. Its bright, crisp acidity makes it fantastic with all fresh white fish and seafood—think quick pairings like sushi, crab cakes, or fish 'n' chips. It is equally brilliant with light, earthy dishes: try it with a grilled chicken salad, potato dishes, or vegan options like spicy noodles and crispy tofu. Simple, fresh, and versatile!

Wine region
Rías Baixas, Spain
Rías Baixas is a region in northwestern Spain that is responsible for Spain's greatest success story when it comes to white wine: Albariño. The region is broken down into a number of sub-zones, each with their own unique influence on Albariño. However, they all largely share one common characteristic: proximity to the Atlantic. In fact, some of these coastal vineyards are so close to the ocean that the salty sea air quite literally settles on the fruit, sometimes giving the wines a wonderful saline, salty tang. Whilst this is quite a wet region, there is plenty of sunshine for ripening grapes and many of the vineyards are planted on granitic soils, offering up firm, fresh acidity to these wines. Albariño is commonly known for its refreshing character with notes of crisp apples and citrus, but there is plenty of experimentation at play in the region and it's not hard to find examples from more experimental winemakers.
